In this article I want to provide a simple yet effective strategy for a shop owner who wants to thrive on Etsy. Here before we start diving in this incredible adventurour journey into the world of (handmade) business, I want to outline certain prerequisites for the success, as well as some problems people are faced with.

Prerequisites for Success with This System

You should be open to the market and its requirements. Do not think of your own craft or little room with a few tools and materials as all in all. So here is what  I suggest – to always start with a plan. With a reliable and decent workable plan of things, products, listings to publish on your Etsy shop.

Here I want to speak about a wedding category but we will certainly discuss many many others. We do not split it in 200+ subcategories like second-level taxonomy that Etsy provides but a dozen or maybe a couple dozen will be enough to start.

Step 1. We Always Begin with a Plan

Well, begin with the end in mind. When I have my three niche reports ready in PDF format, sorted by Used in Shops, by Search Volume and by Competition Index, this is a tremendous field for beginning my research (and preparing a plan). Usually I have 10K+ search terms in the left column, and all of them are authentic Etsy tags which is logical because we analyse several dozens of successful Etsy shops in the niche for these reports.

I begin with Sorted by Used in Shops because these tags are mostly used in the shops. I browse through first pages and find several phrases that I find interesting. Usually I select 20-30 phrases in the first round, then save them in an Excel spreadsheet. Here is a short list I took from the first report: bridal shower gift; best man gift; groomsman gift; rustic wedding; thank you cards; tea length; kissing game; mr and mrs; bridal garter; wedding garter set; personalized napkins; engagement gift; whiskey decanter; personalized flask; cake topper; glitter wedding; be my bridesmaid; wedding reception; bridesmaid tote.

Then I go to the second and third report, and see some top choices for good matches. For example, some words with good competitive index that I get are: moth balls (188),  merci beaucoup (179),  the night before (178), cheap humidors (146), say yes to the dress (120), led flashlight (119), salud (109), and for Search Volume I select: tis the season; mothers day; periodic table; flashlight.

For the tag ‘bridal shower gift’ I also see some so-called satellites, or tags that are often used alongside with the search item. bridal shower gift (13), bridal shower (8), wedding gift (7), bride to
be gift (3), bachelorette party (3), engagement gift (3), personalized gift (3), gift for couple (2), bridal shower decor (2), party favors (2), party favor (2), wedding photo album (2), bachelorette gift (2), weddings (2), shower favor (2), dress sketch (2), bridal illustration (2), myartspace (2), engagement (2), photo album (2), wedding decoration (2), gold shawl pin (2), hijab pin scarf pin (2), veil gown lace shoes (2), valentines day gift (2). I highlighted some of the interesting matches but sometimes I even go to my basic reports Excel file to find even more matches.

Wedding hanger, future mother-in-law, toasting flutes, maid of honor gift – here are only a few finds for my future explorations.

Step 2. We Learn SEO from Reports

For me it is important to learn which key phrases people use to search for specific items. gift for dad (9), dad (6), gift for him (6), fathers day gift (4),
docking station (4), gift for husband (4), personalized (4), gift for men (4), father’s day (3), mens gift (3), groomsmen gift (3), personalized gift (3), custom gift (2), boyfriend gift (2), wedding (2), valentine’s day (2), handmade gift (2), gifts for men (2), groom gift (2), new dad gift (2), husband (2), wood docking station (2), gifts for him (2), husband gift (2), christmas (2), tshirt (2), dad birthday gift (2), funny (2), dad gift (2).

These phrases are great for writing a persuasive copy as well as decide which terms to accentuate in the title. So I can craft a title like Funny Gift for Dad – Personalized Father’s Day Mens Gift Groom New Dad Gift – Wood Docking Station (if I prefer to use that item as an example).

Here is another example – groomsman gift (15), groomsmen gift (8), best man gift (7), father of the bride (7), groomsman (5), groomsmen (5), personalized gift (5), gift for him (4), valetines day (4), flask (3), wedding gift (3), gifts for men (3), money clip (3), father of the groom (3), mens gift (3), bridal party gifts (3), personalized (3), groomsmen gifts (3), best man (2), fathers day (2), wedding flask (2), thank you wedding (2), wedding (2), thankyou groomsman (2), to my best man card (2), engraved (2), best man greeting (2), bestman card (2). I get ideas as to engaving, my best man card, flask, money clip – well, you get a gist of presents that people select for the occasion. Frankly, even though I do not drink, I got a flask as a present, too 🙂

Step 3. Niche Vocabulary Building

There is a lot to learn from the database like this, and we will go in depth for different data systems and software which will help us in our endevours, but let us be simple in this stage. I want to emphasize the importance of understanding the vocabulary and build niche knowledge skills with regular exercises like the one I will quote here.

For bridal shower, for example, as a non-native speaker and a foreigner I frankly know nothing of the tradition, and I think that most of you are not aware of its full history and traditions. When does this ceremony occur, how guests are invited, which gifts are considered the best ones and suitable, etc, etc. For the bedroon or kitchen – well, this can be understood but it is also better to know how this was related to the dowry in the past, and how wife’s role was defined –  ‘with its emphasis on the future role of the bride-to-be as family cook, homemaker, and sexual partner’.

It is a good idea to use a free software like https://www.online-utility.org/text/analyzer.jsp to get statistics of used words and phrases, too.

Step 4. Etsy Research / Several Good Matches

Our next step is to make a hand selected collection of items that we consider to be matching our key phrase. Here is a visual representation of 6 items that I found on Etsy:

When I sit and plan for my next product, I want to be as open to new ideas as possible. No prejudices, no misconcepts. Clean up your mind and prepare for a journey to new realm of marketing opportunities. I see that sets of cups, boxes, a book, a journal, a map in the form of a heart – these attracted my attention and appealed to my taste.

Well, for bridal shower gift – I have my ideas in place, and so I can work on creating the products, making good pictures and describing them. Very cool indeed!

Step 5. Using Third-Party Software – MerchantWords, Google Keyword Suggestion Tool, Google Trends etc.

So here is an interesting part again. I use MerchantWords tables as example but you can take your own favorite system. From Merchant Words I get data about terms most often used and which are connected to the term that I provide.
